(This has been in my drafts for a minute, while I thought & overthought about sharing it. Moving from a space of healing & expansion, I hope it reaches hearts & minds that may need it.)
In March, I came across a post on Instagram from Raising Self where she says, and I’m paraphrasing: “I am allowing myself to be who my mother wouldn’t allow her self to be.”
If you read my other past letter Getting the Rhythm of an Unconventional Life, then you know that my life now is one of solo exploring &, among other things, not connecting ~achievement to a romantic relationship …(still, if Black Jesus wanna swing through & smack me in my face when it’s time, I’m into it!) I’m grateful for the path my mother made amidst it all, while ensuring my own now is more aligned with prioritizing wellness & peace; doing the work to SEE myself without anything extra. & I’ve had to unpack and investigate what it all means. (This letter feels like a nice progression of Designing Your Life btw)
Our mothers & mother figures impact so much of our lives. Those first relationships carry over into how we see & love ourselves, the relationships we entertain — specifically in sisterhood, the boundaries we form (& hold in place), how we show up, how we celebrate ourselves… so much of the VALUE of who we are, period.
In business, I’ve seen & heard from clients all the ways confidence gets shaken or boosted, what’s prioritized to invest in, the ways folks choose to engage with their community, or not… factors that directly impact success and achievements. (Not only funds & appearance but internally!) & without support or guidance, it can be rocky figuring out how to resolve it all. So…What do we do?
We have to give ourselves (& our mothers) grace & time in understanding who our mothers are, to better understand them & ourselves.
So many of you may be able to relate, especially if you’re here as a new subscriber from Wanda’s (Black Women Travel) recommendation. (Hey to you & appreciate you joining me here.)
How are you valuing yourself? Are you seeing yourself from a place of limitless potential & admiration?
Are you allowing yourself to grow into more than you can imagine — especially more than any obstacles you (or the mother figure[s] in your life) have overcome?
We birth innovations, joys, peace, ideas into this world and in other people… You’re growing, nurturing loving it all into fruition and you’re birthing yourself, over and over again.
I’d love to hear your feelings & thoughts on this stage of your life.
Until the next letter 💛
